A charity has released an urgent appeal to home guide-dog mums in the new year.

Guide Dogs, a sight loss charity, is looking for volunteers across Worcestershire who can give a loving home to one of their four-legged mums in the new year.

Lyn Brehaut, who is from Worcester, has been a volunteer Breeding Dog Holder for Guide Dogs for three years and looks after a guide dog mum called Dottie.

Dottie had her second litter of pups on December 12, which was a lovely end to the year.

She had five boys and four girls who will be named at around six weeks of age.

The dog owner said: "It was lovely having puppies with us on Christmas Day. They lay, slept, and looked gorgeous.

"We had a stocking hung up for each of the pups and they had a little toy and a crochet blanket each, which they’ll take with them when they leave us.

"Dottie is just lovely to have around - she’s a really fantastic dog. The times when she’s not pregnant are great as well because she gets to spend time with us going wherever we want to go.

"Volunteering as a Breeding Dog Holder for Guide Dogs has opened up a whole new world. I’ve made new friends and the staff are lovely.

"If I’d known about this years ago, I would have applied a long time ago”.

Kelly Newton, who is the operations manager at Guide Dogs, said the team hopes to provide guide dog mums with a loving and permanent home.

She said: "We’ve launched an urgent appeal this New Year, asking the people of Worcestershire and surrounding areas to provide a loving, permanent home to one of our guide dog mums.

"We provide all the training and equipment required so you feel well-prepared to care for our mums, and their puppies, when they arrive.

"Our guide dog mums can live with other animals and children too, providing it is the right environment for them.

"If you’re from Worcestershire or the surrounding area, please do get in touch. By giving a lifelong home to a guide dog mum, you’ll help us to provide more life-changing guide dogs to people with sight loss in 2023 and beyond."
