TWO charities have benefitted from donations as part of Worcester News' Cash for Charities.

The Worcester News gave local charities the chance to take a share of an amazing £128,000 cash giveaway.

Our parent company’s charitable arm, The Gannett Foundation, is providing £128,000 in cash to support local charities across the country and we are delighted to have a £16,000 share to give away in our area.

We asked our readers to decide where this money should be spent, and are two chosen charities were the RSPCA Worcester and MIid Worcestershire Branch and Worcester Wheels.

The RSPCA received £2,789.23 and Worcester Wheels £1,046.79.

Geraldine Haynes, chairwoman of the RSPCA Worcester and Mid-Worcestershire Branch, said: "On behalf of all trustees, volunteers and staff at The Holdings, I should like to say we are absolutely delighted to have received the amazing amount of £2,789.23 from the Worcester News Cash for Charities Scheme.

"We should like to thank all the Worcestershire residents who nominated and voted for us. It is wonderful to be recognised for the work we do within the local community.

"The generous donation has been received at just the right time. We are in the process of building our much-needed 20-space kennel block and mum/puppy unit at our Rescue & Rehoming Centre at Kempsey, on the outskirts of Worcester.

"We will now be able to provide toys, enrichment and bedding for every new kennel/unit, together with new collars, leads and harnesses for all our canine residents.

"It is hoped the new kennel block will be completed by July."

It is being built alongside the recently completed reception block, which was funded through grants from the Pets At Home Foundation and Lilian Andrews Trust.

A spokesperson for Worcester Wheels said: "We are very reliant on grants and donations and extremely grateful for the award and to everyone who voted to make this possible.

"We are extremely grateful for the cash for charities award which will help cover some of the maintenance expenditure of our vehicles, which cost the charity £34,000 last year.

"We provided 18,934 journeys, 208,730 miles last year of which 3773 were hospital and other medical appointments, 10,508 to Day Services and lunch clubs and 4,653 to social and shopping.

"We also provided 62,280 miles transporting children to and from school."

The grants were paid directly into the bank account that the charities provided details for.
