Pensioner David Venables, of Elgar Drive, Kempsey, was jailed for life with a minimum of 18 years in July for murdering his wife Brenda Venables.

The 89-year-old got away with the murder for nearly 40 years.

Venables reported his 48-year-old wife Brenda missing in Kempsey in May 1982.

The case continued as a missing person inquiry until July 2019 when routine maintenance of the septic house at the Kempsey home where the couple had lived uncovered human remains.

A murder investigation was launched and, through DNA testing, the remains were identified as Brenda.

During the trial, the court heard that the couple were in an unhappy marriage and outlined the 14-year affair he had with another woman.

Venables had even tried to blame notorious serial killer Fred West for his wife’s murder.

The family of Brenda finally had justice when a jury found him guilty.

The 37-year-old was sentenced for his latest offences of theft of a bike and stealing from a Tesco supermarket in October, magistrates hearing he had breached a suspended jail sentence.

Chairman of the bench, Richard Poppleton, told Holder he was going to jail for 22 weeks, adding: "It is clear it (the suspended sentence) hasn't worked in preventing offences, so it would be just."
