Staff at a GP surgery in Worcester have been left feeling scared after receiving copious amounts of verbal abuse from patients as they attempt to work through their busiest time of the year.

Young staff members at Barbourne Health Centre say that being yelled at by angry patients is becoming a daily occurrence as pressures continue to rise in the industry.

A spokesperson from Barbourne Health Centre said some healthcare receptionists and staff across Worcester have started to look for other jobs due to the amount of abuse they receive on a daily basis.

Staff from Barbourne Health Centre didn't want to come forward and share their experiences due to the amount of abuse they had endured.

The spokesperson said: "I would just like to urge patients to treat staff with dignity and not to use social media for abuse-type messages, we really are doing our best to get people seen as soon as we can."

NHS services are in higher demand due to it being flu season, the ongoing COVID-19 concerns, and added pressure from the Strep A outbreak across the country.

Dr Will Taylor, chief medical officer for NHS Herefordshire and Worcestershire said: "We are hearing reports of staff being treated rudely, verbally abused and shouted at on the phone or across counters, and this is not acceptable.

“With more and more people seeking help, it might take longer to get through to your GP surgery or to access other services and we ask people to be patient and kind to our staff who are all working under extreme pressure to get you the help you need."

Dr Taylor said staff are working under extreme pressure in order to ensure patients are receiving the help they need.

He also said: "We are particularly seeing a lot of worried parents seeking advice for sore throats and common winter bugs, and we’d ask that unless it is an emergency, to seek advice online through the NHS website or contacting NHS 111.

"Healthcare bosses across Herefordshire and Worcestershire would like to reassure people that even over the festive period the NHS remains open and available to anyone who needs it."
