A POPULAR city pub has confirmed the date it will be closing in the new year.

The Postal Order which is currently owned by Wetherspoons, announced its 'last orders' will take place on Sunday, January 8.

The pub, in Foregate Street, has been on the market for over a year.

The city pub went up for sale by Savills Estate agency in the summer of last year.

Eddie Gershon, who is the spokesperson for the pub chain, said: "The pub will open on January 8 – that will be its final day."

In 1997, the Postal Order first opened and has been part of the city for the past 25 years.

The Postal Order's name was inspired by its previous use as a post office dating from the 1880s.

By the 1940s, the historic building also housed the city’s telephone exchange.

Although there is speculation an American diner could take its place, nothing has been confirmed yet.
