TODAY'S look back through the 120 years of Worcester City sees us delve back to 1979 on the night the club last won a league championship.

With City preparing to celebrate their 120th anniversary on Saturday, the Worcester News has been taking a look back at the archives to dig out some of the most memorable moments in the club's long history.

The night was Wednesday 9 May 1979 and the Southern League Premier Division title was on the line for Nobby Clark's men as Kettering Town arrived at St George's Lane for the penultimate game of the 78/79 campaign.

Over 7,000 packed out the ground on that night knowing that a win would secure the championship with a game to spare, with Kettering the only side that could deny them that glory.

The turnstiles opened at 5.30pm and excitement was at fever pitch.

Barry Williams was doubtful for the game due to a bad cold, but dosed up with brandy, aspirin and slimming tablets by Nobby Clark, he struck two memorable first half goals in a 3-0 victory.

Graham Allner scored the third City goal in the final minute and the championship was secured before he whole of Worcester

celebrated.

For a short while, City were regarded by many as the best non-league club in the country.

Kettering manager, Mick Jones, admitted afterwards;"Worcester have been a better team than us all season. The championship is not won on one match, it is won over a season.

"We are, naturally, disappointed, but good luck to Worcester in their bid for Football League status."

Nobby Clark remarked: "Words fail me. The lads have been below-par in the last few games, but tonight there was no way we were going to let our supporters down. These fans have been tremendous all season and tonight we have repaid them."

City skipper Ralph Punsheon added: "Fantastic. The best night I have ever had. Our supporters might, at times, be highly critical, but they drive you forward. The supporters this evening were absolutely great.

"When we went out we knew we couldn't lose in front of them"

In topped off what had been a remarkable season for the football club.

In the F.A. and Welsh Cups, there were outstanding home wins over Plymouth and Cardiff and a draw at Newport County.

City seemed destined for a clash at home to West Ham United in Round 3 of the FA Cup until a last-minute own-goal allowed Newport to level the replay at 1-1. The visitors went through after extra time.

A 5-3 victory at Kettering Town in the league at the start of November stands out as one of the best City matches of all time.

The Worcester News will continue to build up towards Saturday's celebrations with more nostalgia pieces, all of which can be found in full on the website.
