England and Wales will go head-to-head in a high stakes Group B World Cup clash in Qatar on Tuesday evening.
Wales go into the game knowing they will need their first win against England since May 1984 to stand any chance of progressing through the group stages.
Meanwhile England’s fate remains in their own hands knowing a win over Wales will see them top the group and progress to the round of 16.
Here is exactly what needs to happen if all does not go to plan.
What needs to happen for Wales to qualify from World Cup Group?
Wales have not beaten England since May 1984 when the debut-making Mark Hughes sealed a 1-0 win in the British Home Championship. England have won the last six encounters, with their last competitive victory being a last-gasp 2-1 success at Euro 2016.
The odds appear stacked against Wales achieving the four-goal win they need to progress to the knockout phase – they have never beaten England by such a margin in the 103 games between the two countries. Failing that, they need to win and hope for a draw between the United States and Iran.
What needs to happen for England to qualify from World Cup Group?
England are on the verge of qualifying after their goalless draw with the USA. Avoiding a 4-0 defeat against Wales will see them go through to the knockout stages.
England will win the group if they beat their home nations rivals but they could draw and still finish top unless Iran beat the United States OR the USA win by at least four goals.
When will England and Wales play next if they progress?
The winner of Group B will play their next fixture on Sunday, 4 December at 7pm while the group runner-up will play on Saturday, 3 December at 3pm.
