TWO guest houses on a main route into Worcester could be converted into flats under new plans – but without any parking.

A planning application has been put forward which would see Barbourne Guest House and Homeleigh Guest House in Barbourne Road, Worcester, converted into 13 new one-bed apartments.

No car parking would be provided.

A statement included with the application said: “The proposal includes the creation of 13 new one bed, self-contained apartments within two existing guest houses, one basement unit and four apartments on each floor.

“The main access to the apartments will be off Barbourne Road, however, rear access will be available for occupants who choose to use the rear courtyard.

“To accommodate the apartments on the second floor, it is being proposed to raise the existing pitched roof and replace the existing flat roof with a pitched roof as it is more sympathetic and in keeping with its context rather than a flat roof. Both proposed pitched roof ridges are to be the same height.

“A new dormer is proposed to be constructed which will accommodate the bathroom and kitchen in both buildings.”

A similar plan to convert the neighbouring Wyatt Guest House, which had been put up for sale in 2015, into a house of multiple occupation (HMO) with 13 rooms was backed by the city council’s planning committee in 2019.

The decision eventually came despite concerns about the lack of parking spaces.

A resident parking scheme, which takes in St George’s Square, parts of St George’s Lane North and parts of Barbourne Road, was set up in 2013.

It is not the only work which could soon take place in Barbourne Road with a separate plan to build a ‘modern’ glass extension above the grade-II listed Thorneloe House, which sits opposite the Barbourne and Homeleigh guest houses, alongside four two-bed homes was put forward last month.

Several objections have been raised again the plan saying it would “ruin” the look of the listed building.

You can have your say on the plan by visiting Worcester City Council’s website.

The application number is 22/00900/FUL and consultation ends on December 14.
