The day one of the greatest guitarists of all time visited Worcester is to be celebrated with a piece of riverside artwork.

Jimi Hendrix played Worcester’s historic Gaumont Theatre on April 2, 1967 - just three years before his death.

Now a new work, named Hendrix in Worcester, will celebrate the rock icon and mark what would have been his 80th birthday.

And the team behind the artwork, which will sit on The Worcester Plinth, want to hear from anyone who saw Hendrix’s Foredraft Street gig.

They want people who remember the concert to get in touch before the artwork is unveiled on Sunday, November 27.

Artist Iona Rowland and the Worcester Plinth team say they have a particular interest and love for Hendrix.

“This artwork will build on my 2021 commission Hendrix in London for the Handel & Hendrix Museum, and delve further into the significance of Jimi's time and performances in the UK,” said Iona.

'We want to hear from you'

Oliver Carpenter, part of The Worcester Plinth team, said: “If you saw Hendrix in Worcester back in 1967, we want to hear from you to invite you to the launch party and hear your memories of the night.

“Worcester was on the touring circuit of all the great names in music back then and we hope to remind the city of its great musical heritage with this splendid piece of work by Iona.”

The video above shows Hendrix performing at the Gaumont, which closed in 1974.

But he wasn’t the only big star to play at the now empty building. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Cliff Richard, Queen and David Bowie also played at the venue in Foregate Street.

The Worcester Plinth uses a prominent derelict riverside building, The Screen House, which has been unused since it was the water outlet for the power station on Hylton Road, which was demolished in 1979.

A number of art installations have already used the space, including a fish sculpture that celebrated the completion of the Unlocking the Severn project.
