A CYCLIST has been seriously hurt after falling off his bike on a main road in the city.

The man fell off his bike on the A38 Barbourne Road with the Midlands Air Ambulance helicopter called to the scene.

Barbourne Road remains closed in both directions to vehicles with drivers asked to avoid the area.

The man has been taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham by ambulance at just before 9.30am this morning.

The doctor and critical care paramedic from the air ambulance travelled with the patient on the back of the ambulance to help continue treatment en route to hospital.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a patient who had fallen from his bicycle on Barbourne Road at 9.21am.

"Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Strensham attended the scene.

"On arrival we discovered one male patient who was treated for serious injuries before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, by land ambulance.

"The doctor and critical care paramedic from the air ambulance travelled with the patient on the back of the ambulance to help continue treatment en route to hospital."

Police are currently at the scene which has been closed off with barriers.

People travelling into the city are being diverted along Shrubbery Avenue.

However, there are long tailbacks in both directions on Barbourne Road as well as along neighbouring roads near the accident.

Police at the scene said they expect the road to be closed for several hours while they carry out their investigations.

The crash happened near the Kwik Fit garage on Barbourne Road.

There have also been changes to the bus service following the crash.

First Bus said its 36 and 144 buses are now being diverted.

"Due to a road closure on Barbourne Road, these services are being diverted as follows:

"Service 144 - Lowesmoor, Rainbow Hill, Astwood Road and Bilford Road to resume normal route from Droitwich Road.

"This will divert both ways.

"Service 36 - Lowesmoor, Rainbow Hill and Astwood Road, turning right into Bilford Road to resume normal route.

"This will divert both ways."
