GHELUVELT park is looking hardly recognisable due to construction being undertaken for a multi-million-pound new bridge.

The Kepax bridge project is a new walking and cycling bridge from Gheluvelt Park to the former Kepax landfill site in Worcester.

Work first began at the start of October ahead of the main work which is said to begin towards the end of the year.

Large areas of what was once grass can now be seen dug up, with bollards and construction vehicles at work.

The county council previously said that the new bridge is an important part of its walking and cycling plans.

It is believed that the bridge will lead to improvements in active travel infrastructure in Worcester and the wider county.

Last month, it was revealed that the cost of building the new bridge had almost doubled to nearly £16 million – up from around £9 million three years ago.

The council blamed inflation and rising costs for the spiralling budget but says it will still be able to afford the bridge.

The council has said it can pay for the bridge if it moves around some of the money in its existing budgets and makes big cuts to its own capital spending – including important capital funds allocated for infrastructure projects.

It has been almost a year since the council received planning permission for the bridge and work is now finally underway.

A previous version of this story which said the council faced moving money from its infrastructure and roads maintenance budgets (as was incorrectly stated in cabinet papers), was changed to make clear that the money moved would come from capital infrastructure funds.
