FORMER Chase School pupil Malachi Cashmore last week completed an extraordinary feat by finishing in the top 50 at the Ironman 70.3 World championships in St George Utah.
The 20-year-old, now doing a Sports Coaching degree at Cardiff Metropolitan University, completed the triathlon - a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run (half marathon) - in four hours and three minutes.
That placed him 9th in his age category (18-25) and 50th overall, with more than 3500 athletes taking part from countries all over the globe.
"What an amazing place to have a race," said Cashmore.
"Top 10 in the world in my age group is a fabulous achievement for my first season racing 70.3 distance and I can’t wait to see what I can do next year.
"A huge thanks to all those who supported me this year and my Coach Dan Geisler in particular."
Cashmore qualified for the World championships after finishing 1st in his age group at Bolton Ironman in September 2021 and Stafford Ironman in June 2022.
The course in Utah was a grueller, starting with a lake swim, followed by a hilly cycle through the red rock canyons of southwest America and finishing with a hilly half marathon run course.
Cashmore pushed himself hard showing amazing strength and stamina for someone so young.
