A DRUNKEN prolific offender has been given jail time for his latest offence of spitting at a police officer.

Carl Bainbridge (also sometimes spelt Karl) appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Thursday, (October 27), and admitted assault by beating.

Owen Beale, prosecuting, said police were called to the river bank in Worcester at 4.30pm on September 22 this year to reports of a man and woman having passed out.

The prosecutor said, on arrival, officers found the 37-year-old drunk "in and out" of consciousness, so an ambulance was called.

Mr Beale said Bainbridge was placed on a stretcher at which point he became agitated and had to be handcuffed.

Bainbridge had then spat at PC Davidson, the spit landing on his arm and hand, magistrates heard.

"He was wearing gloves at the time so the spit did not touch the naked flesh," the prosecutor said.

"He was taken to the police station."

Carl Bainbridge described as a 'Jekyll and Hyde' character due to his drinking

Mr Beale said Bainbridge had a history of offending, including an assault on an emergency worker that had resulted in him being recalled to prison, adding that was why the defendant was appearing on videolink to the court.

Barry Newton, defending, said Bainbridge was a "Jekyll and Hyde" character who was changed by drink.

Mr Newton explained that Bainbridge usually drinks cider but on the day of the offence had drunk spirits.

"There was no police interview - if he had been interviewed he would have said he couldn't remember anything," Mr Newton said.

Michelle Edwards, chairman of the magistrates bench, said: "Fortunately he (the officer) was wearing gloves as the consequences could have been greater."

Bainbridge was given six weeks jail, running concurrently with his current prison sentence.

The chairman ordered Bainbridge to pay £100 compensation to the officer.

The chairman said there would be no award for costs or victim surcharge due to his limited finances, and because magistrates wanted to prioritise the compensation.

Bainbridge, of no fixed abode but previously of Betjeman Close, Pershore, has more than 130 convictions.

In January we reported on him appearing at the court for a drunk and disorderly at Pershore station in which he was so drunk officers had to carry him to a police car.
