He said: “I am delighted that my fellow members of parliament have united around one candidate in the national interest and I am looking forward to supporting Rishi Sunak to deliver for our country.
"After a tumultuous period that has done nobody in politics any credit, we now need to provide serious credible government in the national interest and deliver on our 2019 manifesto.”
“It has been clear to me for some time that Rishi has the talent, the experience, the compassion and the ability to communicate that we need in a Prime Minister.
"I was encouraged to hear this from supporters and opponents alike over the weekend in Worcester.
"Evidently, other colleagues have heard the same.
“Help with the cost of living remains a key priority but to deliver a strong economy and high-quality public services we must now unite.
"I hope Rishi will reach out across the party and ensure that the broadest range of talent and experience is brought into government.
"For my part I am looking forward to keeping up the campaign to get our local hospital expanded and upgraded, pressing for fairer funding for local schools and securing vital investment in the regeneration of Shrub Hill.”
