A CONTROVERSIAL road junction that has been the site of several crashes will see improvements.

Changes to the A38 Copcut junction include the extension of a 40mph speed limit and lane changes on the junction itself.

The stretch of road is being reviewed by highways officers following a number of high-profile crashes.

An incident in August saw a cyclist taken to hospital with serious injuries and the road closed for several hours.

Residents have been calling for changes and describing the junction as an “accident waiting to happen” since the road layout was changed last year.

Wychavon councillor Tony Miller said in August he has never liked the junction and thought it should return to being a single lane.

Copcut junction was the subject of a county council review in 2021 following two major crashes, with many citing works carried out in September 2020 as a partial cause.

Although the investigation found the previous layout was not at fault, the council still decided to alter the junction.

The northbound A38 became a single lane with an extended right turn into Pulley Lane.

The southbound side retained two lanes with a slightly longer merge length.

40mph limit being extended on A38

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council explained the latest round of road layout changes.

“Our residents’ safety when on the highway is our top priority,” the spokesperson said.

“We’ve liaised with our police colleagues as part of an ongoing review of the A38 Copcut junction near Droitwich and undertaken some site investigations.

"As a result, we have decided to implement some measures ahead of a final safety audit which is due to be undertaken soon.

“We are extending the 40mph speed limit and limiting lane two of the southbound approach to the nearside lane, with the offside lane for right turns to Copcut lane only.

“We will continue to monitor the junction and the impact of the revised traffic management ahead of the safety audit and will keep the situation under review.”

Cones have already been placed along the A38 near the junction and Worcestershire County Council’s website warns that delays in the area are likely until Wednesday, October 19 while the improvement works take place.
