Three people had to be taken to hospital following a collision between multiple vehicles on the M5 late last night.
Now, Gloucestershire Constabulary has confirmed the crash happened after a motorist headed in the wrong direction.
A spokesperson for the force said: “Last night (Tuesday) we received calls to report a motorist was driving in the wrong direction on the M5 southbound carriageway after joining at junction 9, Tewkesbury.
“This happened shortly before midnight and officers responded.
"There was then a collision which happened between junction 8 and 9 and involved the vehicle that was driving the wrong way and two other vehicles."
The motorway was closed for several hours as a result of the crash, reopening at around 2.30am.
