A primary school just outside of Worcester that has been deemed "inadequate" by Ofsted is taking steps to improve.

Rushwick C of E Primary School received a monitoring inspection by Ofsted on July 19, 2022 after having been judged to have "serious weaknesses" in its full inspection back in February.

At the monitoring inspection, Ofsted found that the school continued to be "inadequate".

However, inspectors said: "Leaders and those responsible for governance are taking effective action towards the removal of the serious weaknesses designation.

"The school’s action plans are fit for purpose."

Ofsted addressed that leadership at the school has changed, with the deputy head being the acting headteacher since the day after the full inspection.

Inspectors found that weaknesses identified in safeguarding at the previous inspection were treated with urgency and that changes to the system for reporting safeguarding risks were made immediately.

All staff have reportedly been briefed on these changes and so, know and understand how to report concerns.

Inspectors added: "Leaders and staff have increased their expectations of what pupils can achieve.

"All pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, are expected to learn to read from the time they start school.

"Leaders have re-established consistent expectations for how early reading is taught."

A spokesperson for Rushwick C of E Primary School said: “The judgement we received in February remains unchanged as the purpose of the visit was to monitor the actions taken.

"We are pleased that as an outcome of the monitoring visit it was acknowledged that ‘leaders and those responsible for governance are taking effective action towards the removal of the serious weaknesses designation'.

"Since the inspection, the school has had several visits from School Improvement Advisers from the Local Authority and the Diocese, which has focused on the standards of learning and teaching, as well as the overall leadership of the school.

"All appropriate systems and policies have been tightened up and updated.

"Our strategic plan for this academic year and as we look further forward has centred around the Ofsted areas for improvement.”
