AGORGEOUS four-acre garden redeveloped after it was affected by last year's summer floods is set to open to the public next weekend.

The main gardens at Orleton House, a Jacobean-style country house located in a secluded spot of the Teme Valley, boast a natural stream running through them with shaded woodland walks.

There is also a croquet lawn, a gravel terrace, and many large borders giving off an abundance of colour and rich perfume.

Owner John Hughes said: "We have a stream flowing through the whole property which caused us some problems with flooding in July last year.

"We did have a bog garden but that was literally washed away and we had a nice boardwalk which had to be taken down."

Mr Hughes, who has lived in the property with his wife Jenny for 18 years, said on top of those troubles a fire to one of the outbuildings meant they could not open the gardens to the public last year.

However, Mr Hughes said extensive repair work has been carried out that would make the gardens "almost unrecognisable" to anyone who had visited in the previous five years as part of the National Garden Scheme.

Mr Hughes said there should be "something for everyone" with herbaceous borders, a swimming pool, and a richly planted gravel terrace filled with unusual plants, shrubs and roses on show.

A magnificent copper beech tree also presides over the croquet lawn while the stream hurries alongside the newly-built boardwalk and tree house. People who visit the gardens will also be able to see adjoining paddocks, while Mrs Hughes' pottery workshop will be open.

The garden will be open between 11am and 5pm on Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1. Visitors are also welcome by appointment for groups of 15 or more people.
