BIG name live music acts are set to take the stage at a new venue that has been given the thumbs up by planning officers.

Priors Croft bar and restaurant in Grange Road, Malvern, has been given permission for a 300-capacity function room.

Owner John Roe hopes to attract well-known performers to the town in a bid to re-establish Malvern's history as a live music destination.

"I want this to reflect Malvern's musical heritage," said Mr Roe, referring to the scores of bands that played at the Winter Gardens - now Malvern Theatres - in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

As well as live music, Mr Roe plans to use the space for stand-up comedy, dance classes and as a meeting place for local groups.

He said: "Although the new function room will be primarily for live music from Wednesday to Saturday, I would welcome any local groups and make it available to them." Mr Roe said the closure of the Civil Service Social Club in Spring Lane meant there was a need for a sizeable function facility in Malvern.

Planning permission was granted by the district council.

The development, which still requires alcohol licensing, would consist of a stage and dancefloor area, with new toilets and office.

It would sit at the back of the current building and Mr Roe claims it would have little impact on the appearance of the site from Grange Road.

Entry would be from inside Priors Croft or by a side entrance, currently being used for parking.
