A CHAMPION cyclist from Malvern is calling on keen bike-riders to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and help change the lives of people affected by cancer.

Commonwealth Games mountain bike gold medallist and British Beijing Olympic team member Liam Killeen is urging people to sign up to the Macmillan Teme Valley Bike Ride, supported by QinetiQ, which will take place on Sunday, June 8.

Cyclists taking part can choose between a family, intermediate, or advanced ride with all starting and finishing at the Chantry High School, Martley.

The new routes designed by Mr Killeen, a patron of the event, follow on from the successful Macmillan Elgar Rides in previous years.

Mr Killeen said: "I know the importance of skilled care from my own experience of cancer among my family and friends and Macmillan nurses are a precious resource. Cancer must touch every family in some form these days. Collaboration between the NHS and organisations like Macmillan is essential for the effective treatment and support of individuals and their families."

Macmillan organiser Jon Rayner said: "Our Macmillan Elgar Rides in 2005 to 2007 were extremely successful, each raising more than £10,000 for our work but we felt it was time for a change of scenery. Where better than the glorious Teme Valley, one of the loveliest and most unspoilt corners of the country. We are very grateful for QinetiQ's continued support as our main sponsor and we are looking forward to giving cyclists a great day out in our beautiful Worcestershire countryside while they raise funds to help us to support people living with cancer".

Refreshments, Malvern Water and a lunch stop will all be provided along all routes, which will be signed and marshalled.

The distances offered are 11 miles (17.7 km), 30 miles (48.3 km) and 62 miles (99.8 km).

Dr Bike, a Worcestershire County Council initiative that gives people a free cycle safety check and free minor repairs, will be offered at the start while Malvern-based osteopath David Davies will be on hand at the finish offering a free massage for any aching legs.
