Society vice-president Lyndon Jenkins presented a programme of recorded music entitled The Musical Life of LJ.

He recalled the first concert he attended, the first time he saw Sir Thomas Beecham conducting and talked about his love of music from a young age.

He revealed anecdotes about various conductors he has been associated with such as Boult, Barbirolli and Sargent, and reflected on his days in the National Youth Orchestra of Wales and later in the Royal Artillery Band.

The talk was interspersed with musical extracts such as Dvorak's fifth Slavonic Dance, music by Hubert Parry and a recording by Evelyn Barbirolli, whose memorial service he had attended recently.

As a teenager Lyndon became a fan of the music of Delius and an extract from scenes from Irmolin was heard.

Lyndon only touched on his years in Birmingham, so members expressed the wish for him to continue his talk next year.

On May 9, Tony Baker will present Out and About, a programme of recorded music which will be held at Holy Innocents community centre, Kidderminster, starting at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome.
