The Walled Garden, 6 Rose Terrace, off Fort Royal Hill, Worcester, WR5 1BU. Admission £2, children free.

A walled kitchen garden dating back to 1832 will open to the public this weekend as part of the National Garden Scheme.

The walled garden, an oasis of calm in the middle of Worcester, has been the subject of painstaking restoration by gardeners William and Julia Scott over the last 10 years.

The garden features organically-grown aromatic, decorative culinary and medicinal herbs, vegetables, flowers and trees along with an original vinery sporting grapes for red and white wines.

Worcestershire's heritage of fruit trees has a place here with examples of quinces, medlars and mulberrys on show.

However, it is the 200-plus varieties of herbs, planted by Mrs Scott, a Reiki practitioner and teaching master that may prove the most interesting with visitors also offered short demonstrations about the herb garden.

Meanwhile, an astronomical observatory adds an extra, unusual touch to this 19th century garden which covers just over half an acre.

William Scott said the garden was completely overgrown when he and wife Julia first moved there.

He said: "It's a long-term project so it's always changing. I don't think we will ever will be finished."

He added: "It's a lovely garden just five minutes walk from the city centre and it's a privilege to live and work here.

"It's so peaceful and quiet."

The garden will be open from noon until 5pm on Saturday, April 26, Saturday, May 17, Saturday, June 7, and Saturday, July 12.

Visitors should park on the first section of Rose Terrace and walk down the track.
