TRAVELLERS have set up a camp near a city roundabout, as council officers make welfare checks because the caravans are so near the main road.

Caravans, cars and vans have been spotted parked on a grass verge next to Offerton Lane, Worcester, just off the Sixways Stadium traffic island.

The camp is not far from the main Sixways roundabout for junction 6 of the M5. However, it is not causing an obstruction to the highway so the camp will be kept under review for 21 days say council chiefs.

The cars, caravans and other vehicles are said to have been there a few days, clearly flouting the no parking signs.

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: “Officers from the county council have visited the site to carry out a welfare check in line with our policy for dealing with unauthorised encampments.

"Given the proximity of the site to the local road network and as per our Joint Protocol for Unauthorised Encampments on Local Authority Land in Worcestershire, our Highways team have been made aware of the encampment and will continue to monitor the site for a period of up to 21 days, after which we will review the situation, as it is not currently causing an obstruction to the Highway.”
