MORE flats could be built on the former home of a town’s British Legion under new plans.
As many as 27 flats could be built off Salwarpe Road in Droitwich, as part of a new planning application by Liberty Holdings, on the site of the town’s former Royal British Legion headquarters.
Wychavon District Council’s planning committee backed plans to demolish the old building to make way for a new three-and-four-storey building with 22 flats last April – 14 months after it was put forward – and eventually signed off by the council in February this year.
The building has since been demolished but no building work has taken place and the new planning application means the land could still stay empty for months.

The club had last been taken over by Cannon Royall Brewery and used as a pub called the Legion Inn but closed suddenly in 2016 and has been vacant since.
A statement included with the application said: “The layout of the new building largely reflects the constraints set out in the [previous] outline approval. It has been developed from the outline plan with the addition of five apartments.
“These additional apartments are either in the roof space to minimise the visual impact or on the eastern end adjacent to the car park to the train station.
“The layout provides adequate parking for the residents as the site is within close proximity to the train station and shops."

“The existing trees to the perimeter have also been considered in design development. The tree survey identifies the southern boundary as a constraint in terms of potential daylight. Stepping the plan back from this boundary increase the amount of daylight each flat can receive.”
Several attempts had been made to bring the building back into use, but the Royal British Legion eventually said it would be allowing the building to be demolished for flats with the money raised pumped back into the charity's work.

The application number is W/22/01456/FUL and consultation ends on October 6.
