WORCESTER City Council has come second in a regional recycling league table and has thanked the city's residents for their hard work.
Britain's General Union released the league table which shows in 2006 and 2007 the council recycled 25.8 per cent of household waste.
Mike Harrison, head of cleaner and greener, said the latest figures were even higher at 34 per cent.
"Worcester people are doing brilliantly," he said. "There is very little contamination, so well done to everybody and thank you for all the hard work."
Central Government targets for recycling currently stand at 20 per cent, however by 2010 councils must be recycling 40 per cent of household waste.
Top of the league table was Wyre Forest with 27.9 per cent. Malvern Hills District Council came third, at 24.7 per cent, Wychavon District Council was sixth with 22 per cent and Herefordshire Council was 14th with 8.6 per cent.
