ARMED police were involved in a five-hour stand-off after officers were threatened with a firearm in Worcester last night.

Police - responding to reports of criminal damage to a car and house window - arrived at an address in Tolladine at 9pm.

As a result of their inquiries they were called to a different address in Teme Road shortly after midnight where, upon their arrival, they were threatened by what has been described as "a long-barrel firearm".

Firearms officers were then called, and the stand-off began.

Two men were arrested in connection with the incident, one at 5.30am in Rose Avenue and the second man shortly before 8am in Teme Road.

Both men remain in custody at Worcester Police Station today where they are being interviewed. Nobody else is being sought by police.

At the height of the operation, 30 officers were involved, including dog handlers and 10 armed officers.

Roads in Tolladine were closed until 8.30am today.

Searches are currently being conducted in relation to the potential involvement of a firearm.

Chief Inspector Iain Bailey of South Worcestershire Police said: "At no time did any member of the public come under threat and no one was injured during this operation.

"This sort of incident is thankfully very rare in South Worcestershire but the professional response of all the officers involved demonstrated that South Worcestershire Police are prepared and capable of responding swiftly and dealing positively with this type of offence."

Neighbours reported to have heard police cars throughout the night, and one woman told the Worcester News she had spotted a man running up the road shouting at police officers.
