Wychavon has renewed its support for Ukraine as the nation celebrates Independence Day.

A special message of support has been issued by the Chairman of Wychavon to mark Independence Day in Ukraine.

Chairman of the district council, Alex Sinton, has shared a message of gratitude to the residents and volunteers who have worked to help those fleeing the conflict.

More than 160 households have opened up their homes to offer shelter to those in need under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme with thousands of others donating items and money as well as offering English lessons and support in gaining employment.

Councillor Sinton said: “This has demonstrated that the amazing community spirit, which makes Wychavon such a great place to live, is not limited by nationality and borders but motivated by compassion and friendship.”

August 24 marks the day in 1991 when Ukraine gained independence from what was then the Soviet Union.

Councillor Sinton added: “For our Ukrainian guests in Wychavon, and throughout the rest of the UK and Europe, August 24 has an added significance this year as you express the love you have for your homeland. We continue to hope and pray peace will return to your country very soon.”

The council recently employed two Ukrainians as liaison officers as part of its effort to support those arriving in the district under the Homes for Ukraine scheme.

Alina Shtyl and Mariia Shumylo both arrived in Wychavon in May and are responsible for checking on the welfare of Ukrainian refugees, as well as helping them access services and providing information on issues like housing.

Alina said: “It is a really great thing people have done to share their house or other building with Ukrainians and we, and all Ukrainians who are here, are really grateful.”

Mariia added: “We really appreciate the support and help of the British people.

“Ukrainian Independence Day means a lot, we celebrate it every year and I hope this year there will be celebrations also.

“It means to be independent, to be free and, for me, that’s the most important thing that every Ukrainian needs.”

Councillor Bradley Thomas, leader of Wychavon District Council, said: “Ukrainian Independence Day is a good time to renew our support for Ukraine and our commitment to helping our Ukrainian guests forced to flee their home because of the invasion by Russia.

“I know our officers, together with hosts and volunteers, are working hard to provide the support people need and we will continue to do so for as long as is necessary.”
