"The crops that have been burnt value around £2,000/£3,000.

"But it's not about the money, we've been welcoming people into our farm to educate them more about what we do and we're trying to help the local community and then we get news like this.

"We were going to bail the crops today, but it's a risk to leave it here. We feel like we can't leave anything up here.

The family claimed that the direction the wind was blowing helped stop the fire spread to the rest of the crops.

Mr Gwillam said: "We could have lost between £30,000/£40,000 if the wind was blowing in the other direction."

Alan's wife, Julie said: "We're very lucky. Thank goodness for the way the wind was blowing and the fire brigade - they were on it."

Mrs Gwillam added: "It is very scary and inconvenient, especially with the cost of living rising, but it's actually about people's lives and somebody could have lost their lives in this fire."
