A VISITOR to Stourport who tried to lure a schoolboy to a hotel bedroom for sex has been found guilty of an incitement offence.
Darren Spoors fell into conversation with the 15-year-old at the Black Star pub because they both supported Newcastle United Football Club.
But after drinking heavily, he made the indecent suggestion which the teenager turned down and informed the landlord.
Spoors, who was in the town for a fortnight on a drilling contract, claimed it was "a joke" and a feature of his northern humour.
A jury at Worcester Crown Court convicted the 42-year-old of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
The case was adjourned for pre-sentence reports until the week beginning March 31, and Judge John Cavell granted the defendant bail.
Spoors, of Clavering Place, Stanley, County Durham, suggested to the victim - who was at the pub for a legitimate reason and was not drinking - that he go with him to the nearby Swan Hotel where he was staying.
The victim told the jury: "He said he wanted to do stuff with me that he had never done before with anyone."
It was said "in a creepy voice in a flirty way" and left the teenager speechless, nervous and shaking.
He also rejected an invitation to meet Spoors the next day.
The youth said he told Spoors he was still at school and they talked about his chosen career.
Police traced the defendant to a kebab restaurant and arrested him, said Paul Whitfield, prosecuting.
Nigel Hall, defending, said Spoors liked to drink after a hard day's work drilling for methane gas at refuse tips.
He had consumed five pints of beer and three double vodkas before he made the sex remark to the youth.
Mr Hall said Spoors liked to shock people but now realised he had made a joke in very bad taste.
