A DRUNK man who kicked wing mirrors off cars asked why he should compensate a tradesman for the £1,300 he suffered in lost earnings.

Danny Bushell damaged three vehicles during the Malvern rampage, including a works transit van.

However, the 21-year-old, who told police he became 'rebellious' when drunk, did not accept he should have to pay the tradesman for the work he had lost.

Bushell of Atyeo Close, Malvern, who appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Thursday said: "£1,300 for the transit van. I'm a bit wary about that. He could have easily driven that van. I don't see know why I should be paying for damage to his company. It was only to his van."

However, it still proved an expensive mistake for Bushell who was hit in the pocket with £611 in fines and costs for the wrecking spree.

He admitted three charges of criminal damage after he kicked the wing mirrors of a Citroen, a Ford Transit Connect van and a Vauxhall Meriva in Worcester Road, Malvern on June 22.

Monuwara Begum, prosecuting, said one witness was talking to his friend in front of the Wetherspoon pub when he witnessed Bushell 'stamp down hard on a passenger side wing mirror, causing the wing mirror to fall to the floor'.

He then went to the other side of the vehicle and almost fell over aiming a kick at the other wing mirror. Officers arrived and took Bushell to Worcester Police Station.

"Mr Bushell says he has no idea why he has been arrested and had been drinking since 3pm that afternoon. He could not remember causing damage to any other vehicles," said Ms Begum.

However, Bushell accepted that 'the damage must have been caused by him' if that's what witnesses were saying.

"He states alcohol brings out his rebellious side and makes him do stuff. He knew his actions would cause damage to the vehicles but did it anyway," said Miss Begum.

She said he had a 'similar conviction' from 2019. The owner of the Ford van said the damage had left him with costs of £1,300 because of lost earnings and other expenses, including an overnight stay at a hotel, although the prosecution said they did not have a receipt for this.

Bushell, who represented himself, said the only reason he was pleading guilty was 'because the evidence backs up me being there'.

"That's all I can say really," he said.

Magisrates fined him £233, ordered him to pay £50 in compensation to each of the three car owners, £135 costs and a victim surcharge of £93 ( a total of £611. Bushell agreed to pay in full within 28 days.
