RENOWNED cellist Julian Lloyd-Webber is to promote classical music in Worcester.
The talented musician, younger brother of composer Lord Lloyd-Webber, has been appointed president of the Elgar School of Music in Deansway, Worcester.
The school, next door to Huntingdon Hall, is a leading centre in the region for instrumental and vocal tuition in both classical and contemporary music.
"I have known and loved the Worcester area for many years," said Mr Lloyd Webber, "not least because of its connection with Elgar.
"I am always keen to support and encourage opportunities for people of all ages to partake in music making so it seems entirely natural for me to want to help the Elgar School of Music as much as I can.
"If by my involvement I can help to raise its profile and extend its activities I will be very pleased to do so."
Last year, Mr Lloyd Webber was heavily involved in the 150th anniversary celebration of Sir Edward Elgar's birth and has performed in the city a number of times.
Dr Donald Hunt, principal of the Elgar School Of Music, said: "We are delighted that Julian is becoming part of our team. His reputation and talent will be a wonderful asset for music in Worcestershire."
