A CRASH has this morning closed a Worcester road, the driver saying he was blinded by the low sun when he ploughed into a removals van.

The male driver, who did not wish to be named, crashed his Volvo into the parked removals van in Dugdale Drive, Warndon Villages, Worcester at around 6am this morning.

The incident was attended by four officers from the response night shift who secured the scene, closing the road with cones and signs as they awaited a recovery vehicle.

The impact just after the junction with Fowler Avenue damaged the front passenger side of the car, a grey Volvo XC60, including the headlight and bumper which was partially hanging off.

Debris was also left in the road following the impact with the back of the Volkswagen van which was emblazoned with the St John's Removals logo.

The male driver, who was on his own in the car when the crash happened, said: "It was the low sun. I was coming through and I just didn't see it. The sun was right in my eyes. When I did see it, it was too late."

He said he was uninjured apart from a sore wrist. Early morning commuters turned around in Fowler Avenue to find alternative routes.

The Worcester News understands that the tail lift at the back of the van was twisted on impact and could not therefore be used. The team from St John's Removals, which has another van, was just about to start a job.

However, a spokesperson said they hoped to get the van repaired as soon as possible and had already been in contact with insurers.

An officer at West Mercia police said he hoped the road could be open again by 7am.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police later said: "Around 6am today (Friday 15 July) officers received a report of a car having collided with a parked car on Dugdale Drive.

Officers attended, no injuries were reported and the car was recovered."
