Now a city officer has warned of the health dangers of drinking alcohol during the heatwave after two people were reported to have suffered a cardiac arrest in the city centre at the same time.

A West Mercia Police officer responded to the incident outside Ladbrokes, B&M and Asda in the hope his advice may protect others from suffering similar incidents.

Sgt Pete Frankish said: "In short police and ambulance were called to a report of two separate cardiac arrests at the same time.

"On arrival ambulance located a male and a female who were conscious and breathing. Both had consumed alcohol and due to the extremely hot day it appears they have succumbed to the temperature and alcohol mix and felt ill before passing out.

"A quick assessment and treatment from the attending ambulance crews ensured both were treated, the male party was taken to hospital as a precaution and the female was able to leave the area with a friend.

"Police were in attendance to assist the ambulance crews. No offences were disclosed and thankfully both the male and female will make a full recovery.

"We would like to warn against the dangers of excessive consumption of alcohol in the heat and sunshine with temperatures set to rise further this week."

A spokesman for the West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 2.03pm to reports of a medical emergency on Silver Street, Worcester.

"One ambulance attended. Upon arrival we found two patients. They both were assessed and had injuries not believed to be serious. They received self-care advice and were discharged at the scene.“

The Met Office says the Amber warning, which has been issued for Sunday (July 17), highlights likely adverse health effects for the public, not just limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat.

Temperatures could be in excess of 35C in the southeast, and more widely around 32C within the warning area.

These high temperatures could extend into the early part of next week and an extension of the warning will be considered in the coming days.
