A POLICE watchdog has confirmed it is investigating Worcester officers over an incident in which a man ended up in hospital in a serious condition.

We have previously reported how a man is in a serious but stable condition after a police incident in Warndon Villages, Worcester.

The man had a 'medical episode' following the arrest in which two police officers were also injured.

The police watchdog has now revealed West Mercia Police officers were called out to reports of a disturbance involving two men in Great Oaty Gardens.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has confirmed they have deployed investigators to look into the matter.

However, they say the probe is still in its 'early stages' so they cannot comment further at present.

The man suffered a 'medical episode' and was transferred to Worcestershire Royal Hospital by ambulance following reports of a disturbance at Great Oaty Gardens in the early hours of Sunday.

Two officers sustained injuries as they attempted to make an arrest.

It was during the incident that the man suffered a medical episode and it has now been referred to the independent watchdog.

A cordon was in place at the scene but was removed at just before 2pm on Sunday.

West Mercia Police has referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who will now carry out an independent investigation.

A West Mercia spokesperson said this is standard practice for incidents of this nature.

"Due to the ongoing IOPC investigation it would not be appropriate for us to comment further at this stage, however, we will do so when we can."

An IOPC spokesperson said: "We are carrying out an independent investigation into the actions of West Mercia Police officers who were called out to reports of a disturbance involving two men in the Warndon Villages area of Worcester shortly after 12am yesterday morning (3 July).

"It’s believed that during attempts to make an arrest, a man suffered a medical episode. He was then taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

"We deployed investigators to the police post-incident procedure and an independent investigation was declared. Our investigation remains in the early stages so it would be inappropriate for us to comment anything further at this time."
