A FACEBOOK video was inadvertently uploaded which appeared to show a 'startled' female staff member lashing out at a care home resident after being touched 'inappropriately'.

The incident happened at an employee of the month party at St Stephen's Care Home, St Stephen's Terrace, off Droitwich Road.

A video recording which captured the incident unfolding in the background was shared via Facebook on Thursday.

However, the footage was deleted from the home's Facebook page following criticism about the staff member's reaction.

Managers at the home said the worker had been subjected to 'inappropriate contact' and made no direct contact with the resident, hitting his walking aid instead.

The matter has since been referred to health and social care watchdog the Care Quality Commission and adult safeguarding at Worcestershire County Council.  

A spokesman for the home said: "At St Stephen's Care Home, the safety and wellbeing of residents is always our first priority, we are transparent in the care and support we deliver.

"There was an unfortunate incident during a celebration between staff and residents celebrating the presentation of the employee of the month.

"During this celebration, a resident with limited mental capacity, unfortunately made inappropriate contact with a member of staff.

"The member of staff who was startled, instantly reacted. In turning, her hand made contact with a walking aid located behind her but did not make contact with the resident.

"The resident was not harmed or distressed in any way by this incident. As a responsible care provider, we immediately informed and referred the incident to the regulatory authorities.

"The Adult Safeguarding team at Worcester County Council, who in reviewing the incident, including the video footage, have concluded that the resident was not at risk or subject to any harm."

A CQC spokesperson, said: “We have been made aware of an incident at St Stephen’s Care Home in Worcester. We are looking at this information to see if any regulatory response will be required.

 “While CQC does not investigate individual incidents, we use all information received to inform our continued monitoring and inspection of services.”

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said, “We do not comment on specific details of individual safeguarding cases. 

"A review into this incident is ongoing and a safeguarding response is made to any concern reported regarding abuse or neglect within a care home setting.”
