A PENSIONER accused of murdering his wife attempted to blame serial killer Fred West, a jury heard.
David Venables, 89, is accused of killing his wife Brenda so he could be with his mistress.
The jury heard after Brenda's "skeletal" remains were found in an septic tank at Quaking House, Venables was arrested on July 30, 2019.
During the search of the defendant's home, in Elgar Drive, Kempsey, a book on Fred and Rose West was found.
On Tuesday, (June 14) Mr Burrows said Venables had told police his theory that Fred West had killed Brenda Venables, and had put her body in the septic tank.
Prosecutor Michael Burrows QC, said Venables told police it was "just a theory of his".
"He had no evidence for it, but it was something he thought may have happened,” Mr Burrows added.
But it is the prosecution's case no one else was involved in the murder, Mr Burrows telling the jury it was “preposterous” to suppose that Brenda walked out of the house and was confronted by someone else who killed her.
Mr Burrows also told the jury at Worcester Crown Court it hadn’t been a hurried disposal of the body by someone else, and instead the body had been put there by someone who knew about the septic tank and had time to cover their tracks.
“There is one person who fits the bill, David Venables,” Mr Burrows told the court.
