Doctors were cleared today of responsibility for the death of a pregnant woman who died with her unborn son after her chronic bowel condition was misdiagnosed as morning sickness.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, Gloucestershire coroner Alan Crickmore said the delay of a fortnight in discovering newly-qualifed teacher Melanie Gough's disease played no part in her death.

Mrs Gough, aged 24, a graduate of the University of Worcester, lived in Longhope, in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.

Mr Crickmore said the Crohn's Disease symptoms that might otherwise have been shown by Ms Gough, 24, were masked because she was six months pregnant with son Luie.

Earlier in the inquest, at the Shire Hall, Gloucester, expert medical witness Professor John Schofield said he had never in his career seen a pregnant woman with the disease.
