POLICE are trying to trace an eagle-eyed member of the public who noted part of the registration number of a car involved in a theft.
The man was passing St Paul's Newsagents in St Paul's Street, near Worcester city centre, at about 10am on Thursday when a man jumped into a silver people carrier - possibly a Citroen Picasso - and drove off.
This happened moments after £1,500 worth of cigarettes were stolen from another Citroen parked nearby.
He gave the victim the partial registration of the vehicle - **56 UGF.
PC Richard Harris said: "We are extremely grateful to the gentleman concerned whose quick-thinking and public spirit is commendable.
"However, the man did not leave his contact details with the victim and we would like him to get in touch with us regarding the incident."
The offender is thought have been slim, in his early 20s and wore a black long-sleeved jacket, black trousers and a black beanie hat.
Anyone with information can call police on 08457 444 888, quoting 183/S/310108.
