New technology will keep Worcestershire’s libraries open longer.
Libraries Unlocked is a new service, funded by the County Council, that aims to provide more flexibility for customers and community groups, allowing them to use the library at a time that suits.
From today, customers at Droitwich Library and Stourport Library will be open able to visit outside of normal opening hours, when staff are not present.
Councillor Marcus Hart, cabinet member for Communities at Worcestershire County Council, said: “Libraries are at the heart of our communities across Worcestershire, and I’m very pleased that we’re developing new approaches that work around our residents’ busy lives.
“Change is not a new concept for our libraries which, over the last decade, have introduced self-service technology, established libraries as community service hubs, opened The Hive, co-located with new service partners, developed new learning, health and wellbeing and business support offers, introduced e resources and online library services and increased the support offers from volunteers.
“Libraries are talking to local partners to get the best community use out of the new ‘Libraries Unlocked’ offer.”
Droitwich and Stourport library customers will need to upgrade to free Libraries Unlocked memberships to make use of the new scheme.
This will allow them to use their library card to visit from 8am to 8pm, six days a week including Wednesday, which is currently a closed day.
During these times, customers will be able to borrow and return books, use free computers and wi-fi, use study spaces, meet with friends, hire meeting rooms, take part in adult learning classes and get support from a BIPC advisor.
Libraries Unlocked membership is only available for those aged 16 and over however under 16s can visit during the new hours if accompanied by a member.
Anyone wishing to upgrade will need to complete an induction, which can be organised by visiting the library in person or by calling 01905 822722.
