The president for January Val Stinton, introduced herself, wishing all a happy and successful new year. She welcomed a good number of members, including a visitor for the evening, Liz Thomas. There were two birthdays to celebrate.

Among the lengthy correspondence were several invitations to add dates to diaries and a card from Jackie Taylor thanking the membership for their gifts of garden bulbs and rose plant to mark her wedding anniversary.

The speaker for the evening was Janice Waldron, whose subject was bead jewellery. She opened her demonstration by saying that jewellery making was quick, inexpensive and could be made to suit any occasion or outfit, and a good way of using old or odd pieces of discarded beads and clasps.

Her necklaces, earrings, hat and lapel pins were lovely. Her graphic teaching board was most impressive. This was used to highlight the useful equipment one needed to purchase or a cheaper alternative, the type of necklace, type of thread and clasp. Having gathered these items the craft and bead jewellery could commence.

It was clear that a steady hand, nimble fingers, keen eyesight and good lighting were the key ingredients.

Some of the equipment was passed around and this prompted questions and much interest in her craft.

A vote of thanks was given by Viv Jackman. Refreshments of cakes, biscuits, tea and coffee were provided by Jackie Taylor in respect of her anniversary celebrations. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, February 20, in the St David's Institute when Nonny James (BBC Radio) will be entertaining with music, mischief and mirth.
