A FATHER who assaulted his partner then stuffed their baby son up his T-shirt has avoided prison.
Steven Wood was found by police walking around the streets of Malvern with his 15-month-old son down his long-sleeve T-shirt and a bottle in his hand.
He had earlier headbutted and punched the baby's mother, his then-girlfriend, Grace Lewis.
Wood appeared before Worcester Magistrates Court today to be sentenced, having previously admitted assaulting Miss Lewis and being drunk in charge of a child.
Lesley Ashton, prosecuting, said the 24-year-old had been drinking wine, beer and vodka before the assault which happened in the early hours of Saturday, January 5.
She told the court police found Wood outside at 3am "extremely drunk, unsteady on his feet and slurring his words".
"At the time he still had the baby down his top," said Miss Ashton.
"It appeared to be cold and distressed."
Wood had earlier been at Miss Lewis's house where he argued with her, attacked her and then took the baby away from her.
Mark Lister, prosecuting, said Wood, of Elgar Avenue, deeply regretted his actions.
"He is utterly appalled by his behaviour on this occasion," he said. "It was out-of-character and since this occasion he has self-refered himself to the alcohol rehabilitation team. He realises that a problem he felt was under control is not and he is starting to address that."
The bench sentenced Wood to complete an 18-month community order with supervision and 120 hours unpaid work. He must also pay £50 compensation to Miss Lewis and £60 court costs.
