A popular Worcester nightclub has opened its doors for the last time.

Alexander’s, in New Street, confirmed on social media that it was now closed.

Ownership of the venue has now changed hands, according to the post, and a national bar and nightclub company has “fantastic plans” to transform the premises.

In an emotional Facebook post, a spokesperson for Alexander’s said: “It is with a heavy heart that we are informing you that Alexander’s Nightclub opened its doors for the final time last Saturday.

“The venue has now exchanged ownership to a national bar and nightclub company who have some fantastic plans to transform the location into one of their exciting new venues.

“The years and memories we have shared will never be forgotten.

“Thank you to all those that joined us on the journey and we hope the best for you in the future.

“Keep your eyes open for something special coming to Worcester soon.”

Great memories of nightclub

Former staff and customers were quick to respond to the news, with one saying: “I’m from Wolverhampton and I’ve had many amazing nights at your establishment. Thanks for the great nights and memories.”

Another posted: “Loved my time working there - blessed times - much love.”

Alexander’s has been in the headlines a number of times over the years, most recently in December 2021 when owner Alexander Fell said nightclub security staff would bear the brunt of people’s upset as Covid passports were introduced by the Government.

The bar caused controversy in November 2019 when it displayed a sign described as misogynistic and offensive by groups including the Worcestershire Mums Network, The Women’s Equality Party and the West Mercia Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre.

Alexander’s faced closure in 2018 when police called for a review of its licence because of concerns over continued crime and disorder.

But Worcester City Council opted not to revoke its operating licence or amend its licensed hours, instead imposing modifications to its licence conditions.

A little over 12 months later, Mr Fell told the Worcester News the club was trouble-free thanks to the impact of a new security team and measures including ‘Challenge 25’ to tackle under-age drinking.
