A WORCESTER hairdresser is facing a bleak three months when Sainsbury's demolishes his shop to make way for its new supermarket.

The grocery giant - which started work on the St John's development in November - will demolish JK 3 Style at 19, St John's, in order to create pedestrian access to the new store, due to be completed in summer 2009.

Once the walkway is complete, JK 3 Style will move into a shop unit being built by Sainsbury's as part of its development.

Hairdresser Jason Knight said he welcomed the supermarket's arrival but was furious that the work will leave his business homeless.

Mr Knight said he had been trying to find alternative temporary premises in St John's since October, but hadn't had any luck.

He said: "I always knew it was going to happen but when I got the call on Thursday, it hit me that I really have no where to go."

Mr Knight must leave the premises by the end of February. Despite his contract being terminated two months early, Sainsbury's will not provide financial compensation.

He said: "I don't want to have a dig at Sainsbury's. I think everyone is getting used to the idea of them being here.

"What I'm really upset about is the fact I'll have no where to go for three-and-a-half months and that other businesses in St John's don't seem to want to help me.

"I don't want to move to the other side of the city if I don't have to."

Spokesman for Sainsbury's Sue Bailey said the substantial development was moving "at quite a pace". She said: "It's great that we've had the co-operation of the local community to move it forward as quickly as we have. A firm is coming out to provide the walkthrough to the store and improvements will be done to the premises next door."

Mrs Bailey urged the people of St John's to keep up to date with the development by logging on to www.sainsburys-stjohns.co.uk.
