A MAN on a night out in Worcester assaulted a police officer and smashed a shop window, a court has heard.

Jonathan Cramp, of Ludlow in Shropshire, was in Worcester with friends last November when events took a violent turn and he ended up being CS Sprayed by police officers.

After falling out with one of his companions 23-year-old Cramp, who appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court, became abusive.

Mark Johnson, prosecuting, said police were called to a kebab shop in the city centre in the early hours of the morning, following reports of an escalating argument.

"In their attempts to try and calm the situation down, Mr Cramp told officers to keep out of it," said Mr Johnson.

"They CS Sprayed Mr Cramp and there was a struggle while they arrested him. Cramp began kicking out with both feet and fists."

During the struggle Cramp kicked an officer in the thigh and elbowed him in the face, before attempting, unsuccessfully, to flee the scene.

Before the kebab shop incident Cramp caused more than £580 damage to the Candles and Soap store in CrownGate Shopping Centre.

Mr Johnson told the court blood found on the smashed window linked the incident to Cramp, who later admitted causing criminal damage.

Cramp, representing himself, said: "It shouldn't have happened."

Deputy District Judge John Begley, also sentencing Cramp for possession of cocaine, told the defendant his "only saving grace" was his early guilty pleas and cooperation with both police and the Probation Service.

He was made subject to a 12-month community order with a supervision requirement, ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and pay compensation to both the shop and the police officer he assaulted.
