A WORCESTER couple whose name will be familiar to many in the city are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.

Mike and Edith Grundy were married in Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, St John’s on Tuesday, April 24, 1962.

The couple, whose family name has strong ties to Worcestershire County Cricket Club, have always lived in the city, where Mike worked for more than 30 years on the Worcester Evening News, covering local politics and community affairs.

He was also responsible for the ever-popular Memory Lane features and probably knows more about Worcester and its environs than most of the rest of the population combined.

The couple met at local dances while Mike was at the News and Edith was working at Barclays Bank and have three children – sons Mark, Paul and Simon – and three grandchildren, Rebecca, Sarah and Martha

Youngest Son Simon said: “Mum and dad’s wedding marked another link between the Grundy family and the Worcestershire Cricket Club as it is believed to be the first wedding reception held at New Road.

“Previously Walter William Grundy, Mike’s great-uncle, was the original tenant farmer of the land where New Road now stands and Mike’s parents, Ted and Doris, both had their ashes spread at the county ground after being lifelong supporters.

“My brothers and I are all keen Worcestershire fans and have appeared in the paper as local players or in the crowds.”

Being together for so long, the couple are obviously well-matched, although Mike self-deprecatingly puts the longevity of their marriage down to “Edith having the patience of a Saint”.

To celebrate, the couple are holding a family meal and get-together in Worcester (where else?) with friends and family travelling from Liverpool, Manchester, Norfolk and London.
