A PLAN to build more new homes on the city’s green space has been put forward.
The application would see six new homes built off The Fairway next to Worcester’s Tolladine Road under plans by Tustin Holdings.
The homes would sit on the northern tip of the former Tolladine golf course next to 16 affordable homes being built by Platform Housing.
The plan could again prove contentious after several plans to build homes on the green space have been met with opposition and controversy over the years.
Several neighbours in The Fairway, the road which the new homes would be accessed from, criticised Platform Housing’s plan last year saying they were concerned by the increase in traffic especially entering onto and exiting from the already-very-busy Tolladine Road.
Other neighbours have questioned whether the homes are needed when plans for affordable housing in nearby Rose Avenue had already been approved.
The former golf course land is protected green space but has also been included as a potential site for up to 15 new homes in the ongoing review of the South Worcestershire Development Plan (SWDP).
A statement included with the application by Tustin Holdings said: “Whilst the South Worcestershire Development Plan Review (SWDPR) is only at the preferred options stage, it is felt that this proposed allocation is clear indication that proposed development area is surplus green space that can be supported as sustainable development moving forward.”
Plans to build homes on the land proved controversial when they were first submitted more than a decade ago.
At the time, Warndon Parish Council had warned the plan would be the start of developer's 'chipping away' at the huge green space to build more homes.
Warndon city and county councillor Andy Roberts has criticised social housing provider Platform in The Fairway for "bordering on the negligent" and claimed that several popular paths had been “rendered impassable" as a result of flooding from the work.
The proposal can be viewed via the planning section of Worcester City Council’s website.
The application number is 22/00079/OUT.
Public consultation ends on May 12.
