THE flag of Ukraine is flying proudly on top of the Malvern Hills.

A mystery person fixed the yellow and blue flag to Worcestershire Beacon at some point this weekend.

Walkers have been taking pictures with the banner which has been placed as a sign of solidarity with Ukraine.

Russia invaded its neighbour just over two weeks ago causing an estimated 9,000 deaths according to Reuters.

The Russian invasion has also sent 1.7 million people fleeing Ukraine, creating what the head of the UN refugee agency called “the fastest-growing refugee crisis in Europe since” the Second World War.

Rob Smith, from Malvern saw the flag flying while enjoying a walk along the hills on Sunday (March 7).

Mr Smith, who took this video, said: "It is very poignant and emotional to see the Ukrainian flag flying over the Malvern Hills and makes you think about the unnecessary suffering of our fellow human beings."

The flag, which has been duct-taped to the summit marker, has caught the attention of people using the hills.

Dr Tom Crawford tweeted: "Went for a walk in the Malvern Hills and found this at the top.

"Amazing to see such support for Ukraine, but also incredible something like this can still happen in 2022.

"Here’s hoping for a peaceful resolution <3 #IStandWithUkraine."

The flag has been adorned with a handwritten Lord's Prayer along with some daffodils at the base of the summit marker.

Russia has announced yet another limited cease-fire and a handful of humanitarian corridors to allow civilians to flee Ukraine, although the evacuation routes were mostly leading to Russia and its ally Belarus.

Ukrainian officials accused Moscow of resorting to “medieval siege” tactics in some places, and in one encircled city, Mariupol, there was no sign yet of an evacuation.

In Worcestershire, people have been organising events, collections and donation points to support people in Ukraine.

The donations of clothes, sanitary products and toys will be making their way to Poland for refugees fleeing Ukraine.
