LANDOWNERS with ditches and brooks running through their Wychavon grounds must keep them clear to prevent flooding - or face action from the council.

Council staff believe that ditches and brooks which are not kept clear of debris and growth may restrict the flow of water and be a contributory factor to flooding.

The council's head of Environmental Services, Steve Jorden, said: "We have noticed that over the years people have filled in ditches or made special features of them which has meant they are no longer effective during heavy rain.

"In addition, many ditches are not kept clear which could also cause problems."

He asked landowners to check them once winter floodwaters have receded.

He added: "We don't want to take action against landowners, but can serve notices on those who refuse to take their responsibility seriously and will do this because reducing flooding is very important to us."
