A MAIN route through the city is currently closed while a contraflow system is put in place to deal with the flooding.

The bottom of Hylton Road and Worcester Bridge closed at 11am due to the flooding, as the River Severn burst its banks and water came onto Hylton Road.

Worcestershire County Council says the bridge will reopen following the installation of the contraflow.

The authority says: "Worcester residents are advised to currently use Carrington Bridge (South) or Holt Fleet (North) as an alternative.

"The Bull Ring roundabout in St John's will open to allow traffic to turn right on to Tybridge Street, and will remain open for retail park access as long as possible."

We reported earlier that Hylton Road was reduced to one lane near Worcester Bridge after Storm Franklin caused the river to rise.

A tweet from Worcestershire County Council Highways then said they would keep the road open "as long as possible."
