A GRAMMY award-winning African choir - due to support the Red Hot Chili Peppers later this year - is to perform in Malvern.
The Soweto Gospel Choir, winner of the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album, will be at the Malvern Theatres on Saturday, February 23, with the new show African Spirit.
The show, which will also feature colouful costumes, dance routines and a four-piece band, will include songs that deal with the dozens of different aspects of the human psyche, from the religious spirit, the spirit of love for another - in this case a rendition of Bob Dylan's I'll Remember You - or the spirit of living together in harmony.
Since their sell-out debut at the Edinburgh Festival in 2003, the Soweto Gospel Choir has won critical acclaim and performed to full houses around the world, sung alongside Bono, Peter Gabriel and Jimmy Cliff and been heralded as the most exciting group to emerge in world music in recent years.
In 2006, the choir picked up the Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album. It has recently finished recording with Robert Plant in New Orleans for the Fats Domino tribute album and this summer it will be supporting the Red Hot Chili Peppers on tour.
The 26-strong choir is under the direction of David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer.
